Katherine Jenkins at the Motorpoint Arena – 14th March
The 'golden-voiced' Welsh singer Katherine Jenkins has made a huge name for herself belting out classical arias as well as covering some of pop's biggest hits. She’s a firm favourite with royalty, and is often spotted performing at variety shows and charity galas. Her concert at the Motorpoint Arena will be a real crowd-pleaser, with a set list of show tunes, classical favourites, and orchestral versions of modern classics. Tickets are sure to be in high demand, so book early to avoid disappointment.
The Handsome Family at The Globe – 22nd March
Brett and Rennie Sparks are bringing their own brand of alternative country and Americana to The Globe in Cardiff this year. Each song tells a story: fans of folk music and Gothic fiction will find plenty to love in the intricate lyrics of the band and the faded grandeur of the venue. Their back catalogue is full of gems like Amelia Earhart vs the Dancing Bear and Tesla’s Hotel Room, waxing lyrical about the lives and deaths of beloved historical figures. After a show at this former cinema, The Handsome Family could easily become your new favourite band.
Skinny Lister at Clwb Ifor Bach – 6th May
Folk punk joy will take to the stage at the snug Clwb Ifor Bach in May, thanks to British six-piece Skinny Lister, a band as comfortable playing gigs in Land Rovers and narrow boats as they are on the stage. Skinny Lister formed in 2009, but over the past six years they’ve certainly been around the block. They’ve played at Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival, at Coachella in California, and have even graced the hallowed fields of Glastonbury. Skinny Lister are releasing their second LP this year, so now's the time to catch them before they go truly global.
An Intimate Evening with Art Garfunkel at St David's Hall – 17th September
After a harrowing four-year struggle to regain his distinctive and beautiful voice, Art Garfunkel is on the way to a full recovery. Following on from last year’s successful comeback, Garfunkel is bringing his solo show to the ultra-modern St David’s Hall in the centre of Cardiff. A must for fans of his solo work, this show promises to be a pure celebration of Garfunkel's art: an experience combining song, spoken word, rock ‘n’ roll anecdotes and a Q&A session.
