Dine in style in Johannesburg

Johannesburg

Recently named Africa's most popular city among young people, Johannesburg's youthful energy has propelled forwards a fast-growing foodie movement. Fully capitalizing on the abundant natural resources of South Africa, visitors to Jo'burg will be welcomed with delectable dishes and dreamy desserts.

Fine fare and stylish ambiance

Listen to live music and watch the sun set through the bay windows at Signature, a sophisticated fine-dining spot whose exceptionally well-presented dishes are sure to satisfy. Start as you mean to go on with the tasty hors-d'œuvres, including parcels of soft French cheese, garlic and herbs wrapped in phyllo pastry, served with steamed spinach and blackberry port syrup. Seafood dishes are prepared Mozambican style with peri-peri, a classic hot sauce made of chili peppers, garlic, lemon juice and spices. For a decadent dinner, try the signature trio of duck leg, pork belly and quail on a bed of sweet potato fondant.

Supreme steak

Only a 10-minute walk from our Radisson Blu Hotel Sandton, Johannesburg, the Grillhouse is a premium steakhouse with a warm, up-market atmosphere. Start with some black mushrooms lightly sautéed in butter, garlic and port, then move on to the hearty Grillhouse platter. The stuff of meat lovers' dreams, it's made up of beef or pork ribs, lamb cutlets, beef kebab and boerewors – a traditional South African sausage of minced beef and spices. Complement your meal with a glass of Pinotage; the earthy, berry notes characteristic of this red wine will accompany the meat perfectly.

Afro-Asian fusion

Chic and contemporary Orient serves an array of pan-Asian dishes. Try the seared salmon and pumpkin dim sum, washed down with a berry and hibiscus mojito. Other popular dishes include the rainbow sushi roll with crab, avocado, salmon, tuna and caviar mayo, and the grilled banana fish – a line fish filet marinated in a blend of spices, lemongrass, coconut milk and galangal (a root that tastes a lot like ginger), then grilled in a banana leaf.

The Blackanese Sushi and Wine Bar offers tempting sushi and stir-fry dishes, fusing South African and Japanese cuisine. On Sundays, the restaurant fires up its outdoor barrel braai, a South African grill, and provides fortunate guests with sizzling barbecued prawns and a side of Thai-style chili rice.

Specializing in the extraordinary

The menu at Eatery JHB rotates frequently but is sure to please every palate with its focus on local, seasonal produce. The dishes are elegant and packed with flavor: think roasted bone marrow with salsa verde, pickled red onion and crusty bread, followed by pork belly with polenta chips and spring onion salsa. For dessert, sample a selection of local cheeses with tomato chili jam and preserved figs. This restaurant also has an incredible list of wines and craft beers, making it the ideal place to settle in for a long, cozy evening.

If you have at least three hours to spare for a special dining experience, reserve a spot at the Cube Tasting Kitchen and tackle its 10-course menu. Here you'll find taste-size portions of unusual dishes, such as kingklip with beetroot, potato, zatar, garlic and lime, and venison with granola, tea, sweet potato and harissa. Finish up with a classic sticky toffee pudding, custard and meringue.
