In Rostock in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, one of the largest maritime events in the Baltic Sea takes place in August every year – the Hanse Sail. This is where visitors get the opportunity to experience the sea voyage at first hand. This year the spectacle will take place from 10th to 13th of August 2017.
Whether traditional sailors, windjammers, museum ships, cruisers, ferries, cutters, yawlen or Zeesenboote: the Hanse Sail makes the (maritime) heart beat faster. Every year, up to 250 traditional sailors and museum ships from different nations find their way to the Hanse Sail in Rostock and Warnemünde.
Public magnet Hanse Sail
The first Hanse Sail took place in July 1991 under the name “Hanseatische Hafentage”. At this time, the event was a success that impressively showed visitors, that the maritime borders are now open (after the berlin wall was broken down in 1989). Over the past few years, the Hanse Sail has established itself as a public magnet: every year, around one million spectators come to the Baltic Sea.
Since accommodations are often already booked out weeks before, it is advisable to reserve a hotel in time. The Radisson Blu Hotel, Rostock combines the best service and elegant design. It offers you a fabulous view of the Rostock harbor and the old town and is close to the pedestrian zone as well as to the Kröpeliner Tor – an ideal starting point for the Hanse Sail! In addition, from the higher floors you will have a great view on the spectacle. Please note that due to the big amount of visitors, it is recommended to travel by public transport. For this event, public transportation offers special trains throughout whole Germany to bring guests safe and fast to Rostock. The public transport system in town also runs at shorter intervals – best circumstances for a stress-free and environmentally friendly journey.
Sailing-fun for all ages
Have you always dreamed of sailing on the sea? This dream may come true right now! During the Hanse Sail almost all ships offer possibilities to join a sailing trip or a sea excursion. You can choose between daily, evening and short trips, or between family and adventure trips.
Companies that are looking for a very special event for their employees or their clients can hire windjammers or large sailors for groups of 15 or more – for example, for a maritime board party or for a firework cruise.
Highlights of Hanse Sail
On Saturday, the regattas of the traditional sailors take place at Warnemünde. In the evening, the program continues with the traditional fireworks in Rostock harbor and Warnemünde. Together with the illuminated ships, they create a breathtaking, festive atmosphere. The regattas and fireworks are the two highlights of the Hanse Sail – a “must-see”!
Strolls, stages and bungee jumping
Visitors of the Hanse Sail can also look forward to a varied program. A strolling mile with a medieval market, various stalls with culinary delicacies, roller coasters, bungee jumping and roundabouts invite you to stroll around Rostock’s haven city and the Warnemünder promenade. Music-highlights complete the colorful program: On numerous stages, a broad program from the 80s, 90s, party-music and percussion are offered.
