International Women´s Day and Radisson Blu

International Women's Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.

Nadine El Assaad - Executive Assistant Manager at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Muscat

Nadine El Assaad_796x420Nadine El Assaad has big dreams. The Executive Assistant Manager at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Muscat in Oman has ambitions to be the first Omani female General Manager in Oman. Thanks to the Mentee Program at The Rezidor Hotel Group (the parent company of Radisson Blu), her dreams may soon become a reality.

The Rezidor Mentee Program is a fast track development program for high-potential future leaders. Nadine is one of many employees in the 2017 program who have been paired with a mentor who helps groom them for a step up the career ladder.

“I grew up in hotels,” says Nadeen. “My father was a hotelier, so I always had great interest. I am inspired by other General Managers, and I want to be able to inspire people, too, by interaction and motivating people.”

Nadine, a native of Lebanon, started her career as a telephone operator, and moved up to the Rooms Division to Assistant Front Office Manager before changing course to Revenue Management. In 2006, she joined Rezidor and was appointed Executive Assistant Manager at the Radisson Blu Hotel Muscat in 2012.  What’s her advice for women who want to follow in her footsteps?

“Don’t ever give up on yourself,” she says, “and believe in the power of positive thinking.”

Madeline Riley - General Manager of the Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, Dublin

A role model for work-life balance. Madeline successfully juggles motherhood and management of a very busy city center hotel.

Madeline’s schedule works around the demands of the business, so each day can be quite different. She has two children: Chloe, 11 and Steven, 8.  Madeline says she loves the mornings when she can sit with her kids, as a family, at the kitchen table for breakfast.

In her role as General Manager of a busy city centre hotel, there is no such thing as a typical day or week! As a working mother, Madeline has honed her multi-tasking and scheduling skills over the years. She plans her week ahead on a Thursday once she is aware of what events and meetings are happening at the hotel. However, there are always last minute changes –making her very thankful for to have great family support. Madeline recommends an App called ‘Wunderlist’ to help stay organized. It allows you to set up ‘To Do Lists’ and share with user groups. For example, she has a group set up with her team in work, and also a family to-do list for her husband Ian (“He still needs a little coaching but I’m sure we will get there!” she says).

What’s her advice to other working mums? Being a Mum is not always easy! She recently completed a program with Parent Plus and found it really valuable. The smallest tips have made a huge difference to her in getting the balance right in positive parenting and positive discipline.

She would also advise other Mums to never underestimate the importance of self-care. “I feel if you are not taking time out to look after yourself, how are you expected to care for others? The reality is, we cannot afford not to,” she says.

Stephanie Mock - Executive Housekeeping Manager Radisson Blu Hotel, Zürich Airport


In 1999, Stephanie started her apprenticeship as an accounting clerk at Radisson SAS Resort in Rugen, Germany. She says her main drivers to take this position was her obsession for order, structure and cleanliness.

After finishing the apprenticeship, Stephanie was presented with a golden opportunity - a transfer to Radisson SAS Cologne’s accounting dept.  Since the hotel was in its opening phase, certain “flexibility” for cross-departmental work was key for success. While working in Cologne, fate intervened in an unexpected way: she was informed that due to the transition of several accounting duties to the newly opened shared service center… her position became obsolete. Luckily, she spoke to the Executive Housekeeper and was able to secure a position that really let her talents shine!

Stephanie needed to start again from scratch: Cleaning rooms, distributing laundry, hoovering mile-long-corridors… She did so well that in short time she was promoted to Asst. Housekeeping Manager.

“Looking back, after 8 years and another promotion, I feel proud and lucky at the same time. Lucky for the opportunity that really came by chance and proud for the successes we could achieve. By building and maintaining a team, we reduced our turnover to beneath zero, we reduced our cost structure by increasing flexibility, and use our own team members to clean and check rooms when time allows. We delivered a brand audit score of 94% with team motivation and incentives for achieving extraordinary results,” Stephanie says.

“And most important, I still enjoy every day, knowing where I come from…”
