In November 2016, the sixth edition of the annual spinning marathon took place at our very own Radisson Blu Palace Hotel, Noordwijk aan Zee. At the end of the intense and athletic day, a check for the sum of €16.000,- was donated to the Edwin van der Sar Foundation.
After an opening speech given by the general manager of the hotel, André Aaij, the event was kicked off around 11.00 by the alderman of Noordwijk, Gerben van Duin. The event that would eventually take around four hours was off to an energetic start. Over 300 participants biked until they were sweaty. This years participants proved to be very diverse; members of the Vitality Fitness club, board members and employees of the Radisson Blu Palace Hotel, different local businesses and athletic friends of the Edwin van der Sar Foundation all joined in.
This year’s edition provided entertainment among other things in the form of football juggler Erik Borgman, who blew away the crowd with his extraordinary act. Following up were the Flierefluiters from Sassenheim, who set the mood with their diverse repertoire. Singer Ruby and percussionist Frank the Tank performed together, as well as individually. It was up to Frank the Tank to get the participants over the finish line, and he managed that very well!
Children were also able to entertain themselves in the play area full of fun games and activities. Both participants and visitors were able to receive a relaxing massage from the employees at the Palace Wellness Center for a small fee. And even though Sinterklaas just finished up with his busy parade, he still chose to visit the hotel, making a lot of children very happy.
There was also a raffle set up during the event for which participants and visitors could buy tickets. The drawing took place right after the marathon and amazing prices were given out, ranging from a free overnight stay at the hotel to athletic equipment or a free dinner. The range of prices was something for everyone!
Around 4:30 p.m. the check with the beautiful sum of € 16.000,- was handed over by the general manager André Aaij, manager of the Vitality Fitness Club, Linda Boom-Lakeman, and the alderman of Noordwijk, Gerben van Duin, to Edwin and Annemarie van der Sar themselves, who were very proud to receive this check.
The Edwin van der Sar Foundation realizes movement projects for people who have suffered from brain injuries. The foundation tries to stimulate this group of people by offering them the change to move, in terms of rehabilitation or recreational movement. Moving is a vital part of the rehabilitation of brain functions, but it also stimulates social contact and self esteem.
This is the sixth year the spinning marathon was held by the Vitality Fitness Club, owned by the Radisson Blu Palace Hotel. In total the event raised around €63.000 throughout the years, all by spinning for a good cause .
