Aarhus and Denmark - European Capital of Culture

Aarhus and 18 other municipalities in central Denmark celebrate 2017 as the European Capital of Culture.

The title European Capital of Culture (ECOC) represents one of the most prestigious and prominent cultural events in Europe.

Every year, two EU countries are appointed as host countries for the European Capital of Culture. Copenhagen was the first Danish city to host the European Capital of Culture in 1996, and it will be many years before a Danish city can brag with this title again. The European Capital of Culture Aarhus 2017 is deeply rooted in strong cooperation across the entire region.

During 2017 there will be a lot of different activities and events in Aarhus and in central Denmark. The 4 MEGA EVENTS include the Grand Opening, Welcome 2018, Roede Orm and The Garden.

Presented by The Royal Danish Theatre, Moesgaard Museum and Aarhus 2017

Røde Orm – a magnificent Viking saga performed on the roof of Moesgaard Museum – is the result of a unique collaboration involving The Royal Danish Theatre, Moesgaard Museum and Aarhus 2017. Røde Orm is a spectacular outdoor performance of a captivating tale from the Viking Age. The show will be performed on and around the impressive, grass-covered roof of Moesgaard Museum by a large ensemble from The Royal Danish Theatre.

Røde Orm is an adaptation of Frans G. Bengtsson’s classic novel by Henrik Szklany under the direction of Frede Gulbrandsen. The audience will follow Orm, the protagonist, who as a child is taken prisoner and kept as a slave on a Viking ship. However, with his hot temper, he is gradually accepted as a full member of the crew. The performance follows the exciting adventures that lead Orm on Viking raids throughout Europe and the Middle East, before his journey takes him to the castle of Harald Bluetooth in Jelling. In between raids and adventures, Orm finds time to fall in love, make enemies and form lifelong friendships.
