For many, festivals are an integral part of the summer. The perfect blend of great music, friends and (hopefully) sun is undeniably a winning combination. Check out what is on offer at Gothenburg’s Way out West.
Scandinavian festival life usually involves tents, queues and sacrificing comforts for a few days, such as when at Roskilde, Peace and Love and Bråvalla. If you are looking for a festival where you can enjoy good music and an unforgettable atmosphere, without the sacrifices, Way out West in Gothenburg is just the ticket. Revel all day whilst enjoying city comforts and return to a real bed and warm shower before getting a good nights sleep, refreshed for the next day.
This year’s festival is attracting some huge names including Morrissey, Sia, Grace Jones, Haim, Cvrches, M83, The Last Shadow Puppets, Massive Attack, Skepta, Descendents, Deportees, James Bay, Travis Scott, Young, Lean, Jamie XX, The Tallest Man on Earth, and many, many more. Make sure you mark August 11-13 in your calendar so you don’t miss out on the ultimate summer experience.
Meet the festival promoters
Way Out West is taking place for the ninth time and is held in Slottsskogen, one of Gothenburg’s largest recreational parks, making for a picturesque setting. The arrangers, Luger, stand behind the festival and are responsible for attracting many international artists and acts to Sweden. If you want to check out some of Lugar’s concert venues then visit Debaser, Södra Teatern, Cirkus, Berns, Pustervik and Trädgården.
A city festival
Way our West is not just about the park venue. During the festival, events are taking place across the city’s clubs and music venues. In the evenings, you will find smaller gigs and film screenings in Gothenburg's best clubs. This year’s gigs include Anderson Paak, Aluna George, Little Jinder and Daniel Adams-Ray. Films include the acclaimed documentary Cowspiracy and Arcade Fire: The reflector tapes.
Planning what artists to see
Concerts are always fun but especially if you have listened to the artists you are going to see beforehand. Way out West organisers have made it easy for you with a Spotify list of performing acts, so you can get in the mood and listen until your heart’s content before the big weekend and catch up with the newest releases.
What to pack
Packing for Way out West does not need to be as ambitious as many other festivals. There is no sleeping in a muddy tent in the rain involved. However, this is Sweden, which means that rain is still a risk. Therefore, pack both sunscreen and rain boots and be ready for anything!
The festival environment
The food available at the festival site is vegetarian only, often made from organic, locally produced ingredients. If you really have a desire to tuck into some meaty dishes, there is a kiosk a few metres outside the festival area where you can get hotdogs. The festival is environmentally certified, which means that negative environmental impacts are kept to a minimum.
Way Out West is one of Sweden’s largest festivals and is always sold out. If you have missed out this year, there is always next. Get planning and remember to secure your accommodation at the Radisson Blu Riverside Hotel, Gothenburg and travel tickets at the same time. The hotel is located on the city’s waterfront and a quick boat ride over the canal will see you at the festival site in minutes.
