From the birth of civilisations to the rise of religions, the emergence of agriculture to the first printed words, Asian culture has left an indelible mark on the modern world. Far from being consigned to the history books however, this heritage can still be seen all across the region. It is no coincidence that China has the world’s second highest total of UNESCO World Heritage sites (only Italy has more). For curious travellers, Asia’s rich history and diverse regional cultures present boundless opportunities for discovery and adventure.

Chongqing, China

Chongqing is a vast megacity that reflects modern China’s rapid development, but visitors to the city can still discover a wealth of historical treasures. Dating from the 7th Century, the Dazu Rock Carvings are a breath-taking collection of 50,000 ancient sculptures carved into the cliffs. Recognised by UNESCO, they are wonderful examples of ancient art and local beliefs.

Another UNESCO-listed site is the South China Karst - an other-worldly landscape of soaring stone peaks, natural bridges and caves covering almost 10,000 hectares (pictured above). Visitors who wish to understand the area’s more recent human history should visit the riverside town of Ciqikou, which thrived in the Ming Dynasty and retains a traditional ambience, with wooden teahouses and ornate temples.

Nestled on one of the city’s liveliest streets, Radisson Blu Plaza Chongqing features 308 hotel rooms and suites with views of the city and Yangtze River, plus four restaurants and bars, a fitness centre, yoga room and indoor pool.

Hyderabad, India

Hyderabad’s history is intertwined with the rise and fall of empires, from the Kakatiya to the Mughals and the British Raj. Now India’s fourth largest city, Hyderabad houses almost ten million people, but there are plenty of opportunities to uncover its diverse cultural heritage.

The monument and mosque of Charminar was built in 1591 to mark the establishment of Hyderabad as the regional capital, a pivotal moment in the city’s history, while Salar Jung Museum is one of the three National Museums of India with a collection of 1.1 million artworks artefacts spread across 38 galleries. Meanwhile, guests in search of India’s modern culture should head to Ramoji Film City, the largest studio complex in the world featuring almost 50 stages and permanent sets.

Cebu City, Philippines

Cebu is a hugely significant setting in the history of global discovery. This is where Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan arrived in Asia in 1521 during the first-ever circumnavigation of the globe. Magellan also died in Cebu but the city retains a strong European influence. Fuerte de San Pedro is an excellent example of the Spanish forts that were built all across the Philippines, and has been variously used by Spanish conquistadors to Filipino revolutionaries and the US Army.

Yap-Sandiego Ancestral Home is one of the country’s oldest houses and retains its hand-carved furniture and ancient artworks, while the Carbon Market has operated since the 19th Century and is Cebu’s oldest market. Finally, visitors who want a bird’s eye view of this historical city can climb to the Sky Experience Adventure, a rooftop activity centre and Sky Walk.
