The tradition of the Fête des Lumières (Festival of Lights) dates back to 1852 and was initially a religious celebration. Over time, the celebration has become less religious and is now mostly focused on Light. Since then, however, one thing has remained: on December 8th, citizens of Lyon light up their windows with candles all over the city. With the addition of an impressive light show from December 7th to December 9th, Lyon is truly a magical place to be in December!

An impressive urban performance

Nowadays, the celebration has expanded to become a major event for the city. In a way, Lyon has become a European center for light exhibitions and performances. Every year, thousands of visitors flock to the city to discover its numerous light installations.

Key highlights from the 2017 Fête des Lumières

In 2017, events will be taking place all over the city, in all districts,  and the program will be centered around a number of specific themes or highlights: interactive installations, lighting installations, projections, live shows, street illuminations, participatory events, etc.

All the most emblematic places and monuments in Lyon present magnificent installations as is the case this year on the Place Bellecour (« Promenons-nous », « Mega-Candela »), on the Place des Terreaux (« Enoha fait son cinéma »), at the Théâtre des Célestins (« Vingt années lumière »), at the Théâtre Antique (Balāha) and many others.

The entire hill will be appear sculpted by a magnificent light show and all the monuments will be redesigned: the quais, the Justice Palace, Saint-Jean Cathedral, the Rosaire Gardens and finally the Basilique de Fourvière. Fourvière will become one gigantic and beautiful painting where geometrical shapes and Aurora Borealis will mingle.

So, save the dates! The Festival will be taking place on December 7th, 8th and 9th, from 8PM to Midnight and on December 10th from 7PM to 11PM.
