The city of Ankara is brimming with shops and stalls for tourists to enjoy. If you are visiting Turkey’s capital city, make sure you know the best places to go shopping when you are there.

Ankara is a historic as well as commercial city packed with traditional bazaars and modern shopping centres. In fact, there are so many shops to choose from that it’s a good idea to plan where to go shopping in Ankara in advance. Modern Malls

Tunalı Hilmi Avenue makes a great destination for a spot of contemporary shopping in Ankara. There you will find the modern mall Karum, an impressive, airy building with a whopping six floors of stores. You’ll find clothing, jewellery, textiles, cosmetics, gifts and more in Karum mall, as well as restaurants and a good dining area on the ground floor.

In Anka Mall you can shop for well-known brands in Ankara. Here you’ll find big names like Tommy Hilfiger, Zara and Mango, as well as Turkish stores. There are also cinemas, cafes and restaurants on site to relax in after shopping.

Cepa Mall in Ankara is another great indoor shopping experience in the city. The modern interior is home to many local and international stores, selling everything from gifts and jewellery to clothes and shoes. You’ll also find a cinema, restaurants, and bistros.

If you’d rather explore the streets of Ankara while you’re shopping and get a taste of daily life in the city, visit one of the popular shopping districts.

In the heart of the city lies lively Kızılay, a great place to go shopping in Ankara. You’ll find plenty of indoor malls here as well as boutiques and cafes lining the streets. Head to the chestnut tree lined street of Atatürk Boulevard to browse through bookshops, delicatessens, and arcades.

Go to Tunali Street and Kavaklıdere to explore pleasant streets and browse through upmarket boutiques, modern stores, patisseries and gift shops.

Bazaar Bargains

If you would like to enjoy some traditional Turkish shopping in Ankara, there are lots of craft shops and bazaars to discover.

Çıkrıkçılar Yokuşu is a must-visit place in Ankara to purchase authentic Turkish items to take home, as well as being an interesting place to explore. In the area you will find hand-woven textiles, leather goods, jewellery and spices, and traditional fabrics for sale. The real draw of the area is Bakırcılar Çarşısı (bazaar), a street of copper workers, where you’ll find hand crafted items of copper as well as embroidery, carpets and more gifts.

At nearby Ankara Castle there’s a range of shops selling everything from woven carpets and kilims to brass and antiques. By the Castle gates you’ll find a bustling open air bazaar which sells tasty gifts from Ankara, such as spices, herbs, nuts and dried fruits. Make sure you also buy some Gözleme (a traditional savoury Turkish pastry) to eat while you’re there.
