The holidays have arrived, the kids have finished school and they cannot wait for Christmas Day to come, but first you must reach your destination. Here are our top tips on stress-free flying.
We all dread travelling in Christmas traffic in order to be with our loved ones or friends. If flying is a necessity and the thought of taking excitable kids through the airport fills you with dread, do not fear. Our top tips are here to help you along your way and make the journey both enjoyable and memorable.
Plan the details well in advance and book direct tickets if possible. Cut out non-essential travelling time leaving more time for Christmas goodies and celebrations. Have all your documents printed, organised on your mobile apps or on email and make sure they are ready to go. Keep all the passports and documents together in one place for easy access. Book your hotel accommodation close to the airport for those early morning departures. The Radisson Blu Hotel, East Midlands Airport is located just 1km from East Midlands Airport and is ideal if you are travelling from Derby, Leicester and Nottingham, as well as other nearby cities.
Pack light with minimal bags
When it comes to packing, pack light and keep the number of bags to a minimum; easier said than done when you are carrying Christmas presents, your best outfit for the big day and some comfy clothes for when you’ve eaten too much turkey. However, some forward planning can help limit luggage. Just make sure you leave enough space to take back the lovely gifts you will receive.

Take the family to pre-Christmas events before the school holidays start so they use up some of their excitement. Whether it’s a pantomime, concert, Christmas market, turning of the Christmas tree lights or meeting Santa, it is likely to get some of that pent up energy out of their system. In addition, get the kids involved in Christmas crafts such as making your own Christmas cards, decorations, presents or gift boxes. Put the kids to action and see how creative they can be. Family members will love the thought of handmade gifts and appreciate the effort.
Managing your travel time
If travelling to and from the hotel or airport, be prepared and know your route. Leave in plenty of time so if there are delays you can handle them without any added pressure.
Have plenty of snacks in your hand luggage and even spice it up with some festive treats to avoid hungry or grumpy kids. Have the tablet at the ready with games lined up. The kids will love to follow Santa Tracker and see where Saint Nick is at any given point in time. You could take along the family’s favourite books but they are often heavy and take up a lot of space, which might be needed for other items. Instead, download audio books with their most-loved Christmas Stories for all to enjoy. Then all that is left is for you to have a relaxing flight.
Once you have arrived safely at your destination there is nothing left to do but sit back and relax knowing that you have made it through the Christmas rush. Most importantly, remember to enjoy yourself.
Wishing you a merry #BluChristmas!
