Reggae and hip hop
When it comes to music in this city, the party doesn’t get much bigger than the annual Summer Jam Fest. Europe’s biggest reggae festival happens in July every year at the Fühlinger See, a lake with islands to the north west of Cologne. Large music stages and a couple of smaller tents set up residence on the islands, while revelers fill up the campsite on the surrounding lake-side.This year the festival opens up its stage to not only reggae but also hip hop artists. With many different genres playing at the same time across the green, red and yellow stages there is something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for some big reggae beats or funky hip hop tunes, you can enjoy both. Summer Jam Fest tickets are available to buy online. They do sell out quickly so book in advance to avoid disappointment!
The Radisson Blu Hotel, Cologne is a 20 minute drive from the Fühlinger See and makes a great base from which to discover the city's top musical highlight.
Top spots for live music across town
If you are in town for the summer, take advantage of more great live music during your stay. There is always plenty going on in Cologne. Check out the ever popular Gloria for live bands of all genres and comedy acts. This venue's particular setting is sure to leave an impression. The Baroque-style interior of the theatre is mostly wood and rather cozy. But the hall does accommodate 900 standing, so if you plan your trip right, you could see some big names.
Another popular venue is the aptly named Live Music Hall. This former factory is now a popular nightclub with a beer garden and a hot food van on standby for hungry punters to snap up anything from a currywurst to coffee. The Germans love their snack vans and although these aren’t the most fancy food venues you’ll find some great local treats. These are often mixed in with exotic flavors, and whilst waiting for your food there is plenty of opportunity to chat with the locals.
