Pre-theatre dining in Uppsala: best shows and where to eat

Uppsala is one of Sweden’s cultural gems, a mediaeval city best known for its university and its cathedral. It’s also home to the vibrant Uppsala Stadtsteater, and if you’re planning a visit, you won’t want to miss out on these upcoming tickets.

For a romantic weekend away, there’s no beating the classic combination of dinner and a show. Uppsala is home to six restaurants listed in Sweden’s White Guide, the country’s last word on fine dining. To celebrate the Swedish premiere of hit musical Come Together, here’s a roundup of this spring’s must-see shows at Uppsala Stadtsteater – and the best restaurants for pre-theatre dining.

Pay a visit to the Cabaret

Take a seat in Kit Kat Klub when the legendary Cabaret comes to Uppsala. Following young American writer Cliff Bradshaw’s search for the meaning of life and love, it’s a journey through the shady underworld of 1930s Berlin. Acclaimed musician and TV host Sarah Dawn Finer will take on the role of Sally Bowles immortalised by Liza Minnelli. Tipped to be a standout retelling of this classic tale, the Stadtsteater’s production of Cabaret is not to be missed.

Revisit the Fab Four

This spring, Uppsala Stadtsteater hosts the Swedish premiere of hit Beatles-inspired show Come Together. A must-see for any fan of the Fab Four, the musical sets aerial acrobatics to the classic songs of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Actors, musicians and their instruments challenge the laws of gravity while performing a set of 30 Beatles songs, all boldly reinterpreted for the production. With our Radisson Blu Hotel, Uppsala just around the corner offering an exclusive Come Together theatre package, there’s no better time to see this inspiring show.

An intimate dinner with all the ‘fixe’-ings

White Guide-featured Edenberg’s is an easy stroll from the Stadtsteater, offering seasonal prix fixe menus for two or three courses – perfect when you’re short on time. This cosy restaurant is passionate about using only fresh, local ingredients to create traditional Swedish fare with a modern twist. Typical dishes include baked beetroot, seafood stew and classic steak.

Romance and reindeer meat

Steps from the corner from the theatre, Peppar Peppar is one of those classical, elegant restaurants that’s perfect for date night. With white linen tablecloths and candles adorning every table, there’s ambiance to spare. Menu highlights include the truffled pumpkin soup and foie gras terrine, but for a memorable Swedish delicacy, try the reindeer steak with chanterelle mushroom sauce.

Wine, glorious wine

Högmans Brasserie, known locally for its warm atmosphere and enthusiastically presented southern European cuisine, is ideal for oenophiles. The brasserie’s set menu includes decadent dishes like lobster bisque and fillet steak, each course perfectly complemented by a hand-picked selection from the extensive international wine list. With its warm atmosphere, the restaurant feels more like a living room than a dining room – a great spot to linger with a chocolate dessert after the show.

Picnic at Radisson Blu Hotel Uppsala

The grass is always greener at Radisson Blu Hotel, Uppsala’s restaurant and bar, Picnic. The restaurant creates a unique arena for natural interaction, highlighted by the stunning glass façade. Both locals and guests staying in the hotel can enjoy a culinary experience in elegant surroundings that give you the impression you could be outdoors.  Picnic offers a new menu with a summer feel, and on it you will find delicious warm dishes as well as smaller entrees and desserts: take one or two, eat it yourself or share with good friends – anyway you`d like it. Enjoy the food, laughter and company, just like when you are on a picnic. One of Uppsala’s best brunches is served here every weekend, and after-work ‘Feelgood Fridays’ are held every Friday from 17:00. Enjoy lounge music and great offersincluding live music once a month.

On the last day of April, Valborgsmässoafton, the popular outdoor serving area opens. The restaurant won an award in 2013 for ‘best outdoor dining experience’, as a unique oasis amidst a concrete jungle.
