Attention ‘landlubbers’ – this post may be confusing at first, but we’ll help you get your sea legs ready for the Baltic Tall Ships Regatta in Lithuania in no time!
Organized by the international organization, Sail Training International, the Baltics Tall Ships Regatta 2015, involving up to 50 of the most spectacular tall ships in the world, will take place on June 5-8th 2015 in Klaipeda, Lithuania. This historical boat race has been happening for over 70 years now and has a very unique rule - more than half of each ship must contain young people from 15 to 25 years of age.
What exactly is a regatta? While the word can conjure up grand images of old timey ships and people in tricorne hats, the actual definition is much easier than you’d think. A regatta is simply the word for a series of boat races and typically describes racing events of rowed or sailed water craft, although some powerboat race series are also called regattas.
Never heard of Klaipeda either? Many are unaware of this fantastic seaport. Which is a shame since this Lithuanian city is rich with history and cultureand is known as Lithuania’s ‘gateway to the world’. Situated at the mouth of the Danė River where it flows into the Baltic Sea, it is the third largest city in Lithuania and the capital of the west of Lithuania.
Klaipeda city Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas says that spectacular maritime events provides an opportunity for the city to reveal its potential as a vibrant center of summer entertainment and recreation, as well as further develop strong ties and traditions for sailing enthusiasts. Klaipeda has been host to the Tall Ships on two previous occasions - in 2009 and 2011, which attracted over a million visitors and spectators!
What makes this event even more special this year is that the race happens to coincide with another traditional cultural event in the city: the Klaipeda Castle Jazz Festival. The banks of the Danė River will be music to the eyes and ears of anyone who is lucky enough to visit during this magical summer moment.
Mayor Grubliauskas, who is also a famous Lithuanian jazz musician, said, “The 2015 Tall Ships event in Klaipeda will set itself apart from former ones with the magic of sails swinging on the waves of jazz music.’’
The slogan of the 21st International Klaipeda Castle Jazz Festival is: “Good Music for Good People”. It provides its visitors a rare opportunity to enjoy the music of world famous jazz stars while taking in the spectacle of the tall ships. What’s more, all the events are free of charge!
