Skansen is a must-visit when in Stockholm. The open-air museum and zoo is the perfect opportunity for an atmospheric day out with the family. If you’re visiting Stockholm and are wanting to take an exciting look into Sweden’s past or just love hanging out with some really cute animals, then you need to make your way to Skansen. Read on to see why this is an attraction for the whole family that you do not want to miss!
Rich in tradition and history
As soon as you enter, you’ll be treated to historical buildings, ready to capture your imagination and transport you back in time to early Sweden. The museum opened in 1891 and is the world’s oldest of its kind, boasting spectacular views over all of the Swedish capital. This mini-Sweden consists of 150 farms and dwellings from different parts of the country that were disassembled and transported here. Skansen has dwellings from Skåne in the south as well as Sami structures from the north.
As you make your way through the park, gaze in awe at the beautiful buildings and take a look inside. Step inside the Ironmonger’s Den, the Glasswork’s or the Goldsmith’s Workshop to learn more about the trade or look at the equipment on display. You’re guaranteed an exciting time, with stories told by live actors who are all eager to answer questions from the audience as they perform their role.
Walk through living, breathing history
If you’re craving a trip into nature, with animals, birds and trees, while staying in the city then Skansen is where you need to be. Why not stop by the school and take a class as they did way back when? And historical buildings are not all you’ll encounter as you stroll through the park. Chances are, you’ll be visited multiple times by one of the native peacocks, your new best friends. Skansen Open-Air Museum is home to several peacocks who all freely roam the grounds. The sight of these majestic birds and their feathers on display is really something!
Wild and wonderful animals
Animals are a big part of Skansen and at their zoo you can observe many wild Nordic animals. With over 75 different species represented, more than anywhere else in the world, this is where you want to go to see these beautiful beasts. You’ll find animals such as elk, otters, wolverines, reindeer and many more. It’s an experience unlike any other zoo.
There is also a petting zoo, where the children can meet goats, cats, chicks and a wide variety of small animals. Who wouldn’t want to cuddle a baby goat or a kitten? No one, that’s who! So head on over, it’s sure to brighten both yours and your kids’ days.
So put on some good walking shoes and prepare for a fun-filled day at Skansen. You certainly won’t regret it!
