You’ve worked hard all year, and you’ve been saving your vacation days until “later” when you’ll have more time to plan a holiday. But the year is ending sooner than you think, and you still have several days of unused vacation. Luckily there’s still time to plan so that they don’t go to waste! Need some inspiration? See below for some ideas on where and how to spend those precious days off.
1. Plan a weekday city break
Long weekends are everyone’s favorite. Who doesn’t love getting a few extra days to explore a city after taking only one or two days off work? But with long weekends come long lines and packed attractions. Take a two-day vacation during the week (say, Tuesday-Wednesday or Wednesday-Thursday). That way, your work week will be broken up; you’ll escape the weekend crowds, and you may even save some money.
Many of Europe’s capitals are perfect city break destinations, such as London, Prague or Paris. Get your fill of culture and visit the city’s top museums or even book a show. In London, for example, choose a central Radisson Blu Edwardian hotel and you’ll be minutes away from the city’s top theatres.
2. Take a solo daycation
Some of the best adventures can be taken solo. Bring your camera and make your own plan. You never know what (or who) you’ll run into, and some of the best experiences are the most unexpected ones! Take the train to an unknown destination or walk the streets of a nearby town. Just leave some time for unplanned exploration.
Psst! The old town of Riga offers lots of charming hidden gems. Stay with the Radisson Blu Latvija Conference & Spa Hotel, Riga if even for one night to easily explore the nearby beautiful streets, and then end your day with a cocktail with a view at the Skyline Bar. At 90m tall, the hotel is a bit of a local landmark – so you'll always be able to find your way back on your own!
3. Visit the family
A few days’ extra vacation? Why not head home and visit your family? Even if you’re planning to see them over the holidays, spending time with them one-on-one without the hustle and bustle of having all the relatives around can be nice. If you have older relatives or friends who no longer travel, take a day or two to visit them. With hundreds of hotels around the globe, check out which of our hotels offers the most convenient location. Alternatively, why not choose a city to visit and treat your loved one to a stay with you? Amsterdam can be explored in 24 hours if you stay at the Radisson Blu Hotel. The top museums and architectural sights will be right at your doorstep!
4. Travel with the weather
The best part about a last-minute trip is you’ll at least be able to check the seven-day forecast. Set off to the destination that is advertising the best weather on the day you’re taking off. Or choose a destination and check the forecast so you are traveling and exploring on the nicest day. The unknown weather variable of taking vacation is now in your hands.
Tip: Did you know that Gran Canaria was known for year-long sunny weather? Book a stay with Radisson Blu Resort, Gran Canaria and you'll be sure to get a good dose of vitamin D!
5. Extend those weekends
Instead of lumping all of your vacation days together, spread them out and take mini-vacations every weekend. Leave at 12 on each Friday from now until the end of the year to use up your vacation days, and you’ll be able to get a head start on the road to your next adventure. Meeting friends at a big city for a weekend out? Use the extra hours to explore the city by foot and solo before your friends arrive. Choose the Radisson Blu Hotel, Prague for a delightful foodie break and scout out the best restaurants.
6. Shop till you drop
Plan a vacation close to a shopping mall and get your holiday shopping done in paradise. Dubai for example has some of the world’s most incredible malls! Not a fan of megamalls? Shopping is a perfect way to experience a new culture. Have you ever been to a bazaar? Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world and is an experience in itself. Stay at the Radisson Blu Bosphorus Hotel and plan for at least a couple of days to get lost in this fascinating city.
